Obituary for Stuart Torrance Lucas

Stuart Torrance Lucas (May 28, 1928 – February 14, 2023)

It is with great sorrow that the family announces that Stuart ("Stu") Lucas passed away surrounded by his family at Grey Bruce Health Services, in Markdale, on Tuesday, February 14, 2023 in his 95th year. Stu was predeceased by his wife, Anne (nee Merriam). He will be greatly missed by his children Roberta [Paul] Johnson, Merriam [Brad] Hand and Christopher Lucas. "Pop" is sadly missed by his grandchildren Annie Johnson, Emma Hand and Lucas Hand. Proud great grandfather of Hudson. He will also be remembered by his younger sister, Shelagh [Pat] Sully. Predeceased by his parents I.B. (Dick) Lucas and Adelaide Lucas and his identical twin, Bob Lucas.

As Stu always said “I’ve had a great life“! Beginning in Markdale, he and his twin, Bob (and later, his younger sister, Shelagh) shared many happy times in Markdale as well as wonderful long summers in Goderich, with his many cousins at the family cottages on Lake Huron. Stuart and Anne lived in Toronto and then moved to North Bay for two decades before returning to Markdale.

His adventures continued throughout his entire life, one of his most remarkable being a motorcycle trip all the way down to the Panama Canal and back with his good friend, Garth Piper. Stu had a wide range of interests, ranging from physics, astronomy, local nature, fly fishing, writing, and especially skydiving. He loved sharing the adrenaline rush of skydiving with others as a conscientious jump master, and made hundreds of jumps over a period of decades.

Stu was a wonderful storyteller drawing from his own life to recount his many incredible experiences. Stu had a wicked sense of humour and loved practical jokes.

The family cottage on the Rocky Saugeen was his most favourite spot in the world and he was at his most content there sitting on the dock (beer in hand) or in front of the fireplace with his beloved wife Anne, family and friends.

We miss you.

Stuart's family would like to thank the kind paramedics, the wonderful staff of the Markdale hospital and Dr. Kahn for their kind support during his last days.

As per Stuart's wishes cremation has taken place. Interment in the Markdale Cemetary and a private celebration of life will take place in the spring. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to Centre Grey Health Services Foundation New Markdale Hospital or the charity of your choice would be appreciated.
