Obituary for Steven "Stevie" Mehlfuhrer

MEHLFUHRER, Steven Andrew

With heavy hearts and profound sadness, the family of Steven Mehlfuhrer announces the sudden and unexpected passing of “Stevie” on Saturday, March 18, 2023 at the age of 65.
Grieving the loss are his father, Theodor, and his sister Linda McNeil and her husband Mark. Predeceased by his loving mother Olive, in 2013.

Stevie’s passing is also being felt by his aunts, uncles, and cousins, as well as his dear friends and support staff of South-East Grey Support Services who provided Stevie with exemplary care and a supportive home since 1997.

Stevie was born in Halifax in November 1957, and moved to Ontario soon afterwards with his parents. He was diagnosed with autism at an early age and slowly lost his ability to speak. He loved life but his life’s journey – through childhood and much of his adulthood – was a difficult one that included appalling abuse at provincial institutions.

Thankfully, Stevie’s last 25 years were happy ones, living in a home provided by South-East Grey Support Services and with regular visits and support from his loving family. This allowed him the opportunity to experience happiness, joy, and simple pleasures that he had been denied earlier in life. For this, his family will be eternally grateful.

Funeral to take place at Fawcett Funeral Cremation Reception, 1 Highland Drive, Flesherton on Friday, March 24, 2023, at 1:00pm with a light reception to follow. Interment at Shiloh Cemetery, May 9, 2023. Chatsworth township. Online condolences and donations are available at www.fawcettfuneralhome.ca
